Germany’s Euro 2025 campaign has suffered a significant setback after national team skipper Giulia Gwinn was ruled out for the rest of the tournament due to a knee injury. • WHAT HAPPENED?

Gwinn’s injury occurred following a last-ditch defensive effort to block Poland striker Ewa Pajor from getting a shot on goal. The challenge, while crucial, left Gwinn clutching her left knee in visible agony. The full-back was assisted off the field around the 40th minute by Germany’s medical personnel, visibly distressed and in tears. She was replaced by Carlotta Wamser, while Janina Minge assumed the captain’s armband for the remainder of the match.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

The German Football Association (DFB) released an official statement on Saturday, revealing that Gwinn had sustained a medial ligament injury to her left knee. The scans confirmed she will be sidelined for an extended period, likely several weeks, meaning she will take no further part in Germany’s campaign at Euro 2025.

  • WHAT WUCK SAID

Germany will be unable to bring in a new player to fill Gwinn’s spot. According to UEFA’s current tournament regulations, teams are only permitted to replace an outfield player on medical grounds up to 24 hours before their opening fixture. As that deadline has passed, the squad must complete the tournament with the remaining players.

Head coach Christian Wuck, reflecting on the unfortunate situation, remarked, “I’ve always said that you don’t go into a tournament like this with 11 players, but rather with 23 and that you have to be prepared for every possibility."

  • DID YOU KNOW?

Gwinn was also forced to sit out the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup due to a torn anterior cruciate ligament (ACL). This recent medial ligament damage marks another chapter in her ongoing battle with knee issues.
